European Guide to Legal Expertise (‘EGLE’) project was initiated to provide a framework for the appointment of experts in the courts across the European Union (‘EU’). It started in March 2014 and has been funded by the European Commission. It originally consisted of four groups which were appointed to research the following themes:

  1. Appointing an expert : mission and expectations;
  2. Expert proceedings and the expert’s report,;
  3. Qualifications, Competence, and the evaluation of experts; and
  4. The status and ethics of experts : free exercise and liability.

EGLE has contributors from Belgium, Bulgaria, Romania, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Spain. Members from the 28 countries of the European Union have expressed an interest in the EEEI’s work. Following the working groups discussions final submissions have been made to the panel of Jurors to review the work and also build it in to a workable document that can be used throughout the EU. This will be published towards the end of 2015.

The first meeting of the Jurors was organised in Rome on 29th May and they have met for a further working session in Paris on 3rd July.
