Matthew Cannon

Matthew CannonMatthew has 30 years of banking experience gained at HSBC and Tokyo Bank Europe in London, Tokyo, New York, Hong Kong, Seoul and most recently until July 2017 in HSBC Singapore as Treasurer and head of a large, global markets activity. He trained as a credit analyst in London before moving to Tokyo where he worked as a director involved in emerging markets fixed income, foreign exchange and derivative sales. He later moved to New York with HSBC to head the bank’s emerging markets sales desk. In 1997 he left HSBC to join Tokai Bank Europe in London as a director in client derivatives. In 2003 he rejoined HSBC in London as Head of Structured Credit sales where he was promoted to Managing Director before moving to Hong Kong as the bank’s Head of Structured Credit sales and trading for APAC.

Following the financial crisis Matthew was deeply involved in the resolution of a number of complex structured securities and derivative positions, negotiations with counterparties and regulators regarding the booking and valuation of very large portfolios of risk and remediation of client transactions across APAC.

He moved to Korea in 2009 as Treasurer and Head of Global Markets for HSBC where the bank operated a substantial and complex treasury operation servicing multi-nationals, large local corporations and a range of financial institutions. Here he became responsible for the bank’s funding and liquidity as well as all aspects of regulatory compliance and supervision for sales and trading across FX, Fixed Income, Credit and associated structured products and derivatives. This involved resolution of complex derivatives mis-selling cases and cross border regulatory dispute resolution as well as in depth investigation of market abuse and inappropriate conduct cases.

In 2012 he was promoted again and moved to Singapore as HSBC’s head of Global Markets, Treasurer and head of the ASEAN securities services business involving hundreds of staff in custody, trustee services and fund administration.

The business in Singapore involved dealing with all client types including retail and private bank sales channels as well as large and medium sized corporates, financial institutions, central banks and sovereign wealth funds. He oversaw the establishment of HSBC’s broker dealer subsidiary in Singapore and the subsidiarisation of  treasury activities in HSBC’s newly established Singapore legal entity in 2016. He has been deeply involved with the MAS and ABS in developing market best practice in areas such as benchmark fixing related activities and overseen governance and resolution of multiple issues involving potential market abuse, mis-selling, financial crime compliance and reporting, insider trading, regulatory compliance, etc.

Matthew has significant experience in electronic trading and global markets technology as well as wider bank governance having been a member of all the major bank-wide governance committees in both Korea and Singapore, reporting directly to the CEO in both roles.
